NEW DELHI (AP) ? Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pledged Thursday to take action to protect the nation's women while the young victim of a gang rape on a New Delhi bus was flown to Singapore for treatment of severe internal injuries.

The Dec. 16 rape and brutal beating of the 23-year-old student triggered widespread protests, including a march on Thursday, demanding a government crackdown on the daily harassment Indian women face, ranging from groping to severe violence. Some protesters have called for the death penalty or castration for rapists, who under current laws face a maximum punishment of life in prison.

Rape victims rarely press charges because of social stigma and fear they will be accused of inviting the attack. Many women say they structure their lives around protecting themselves and their daughters from attack.

Singh's government set up two committees in response to the protests. One, looking into speeding up sexual assault trials, has already received 6,100 email suggestions. The second will examine what lapses might have contributed to the rape ? which took place on a moving bus that passed through police checkpoints ? and suggest measures to improve women's safety.

"Let me state categorically that the issue of safety and security of women is of the highest concern to our government," Singh said at a development meeting. He urged officials in India's states to pay special attention to the problem.

"There can be no meaningful development without the active participation of half the population, and this participation simply cannot take place if their security and safety is not assured," he said.

The rape victim arrived in Singapore on an air ambulance Thursday and was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Mount Elizabeth hospital, renowned for multi-organ transplant facilities.

On Thursday night she remained in "extremely critical condition" as a team of specialists worked to stabilize her, Dr. Kelvin Loh, the hospital's chief executive officer, said in a statement. Before arriving in Singapore, she had already undergone three abdominal surgeries and suffered cardiac arrest, he said.

India's Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said in a statement that the government, which is funding and overseeing the victim's treatment, had decided to send her abroad on the recommendation of her doctors.

"Despite the best efforts of our doctors, the victim continues to be critical and her fluctuating health remains a big cause of concern to all of us," he said.

Her family was also being sent to Singapore to be with her during her treatment, which could last weeks, he said.

Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters demanding safer public transportation for women and the resignation of Delhi's police commissioner tried to march to the major India Gate traffic circle in central Delhi before being stopped by police in riot gear manning barricades. Protesters carried signs reading, "Immediately end rape culture in India" and "Zero tolerance of violence against women."

Protests have shut down the center of the capital for days since the rape. Police quashed some of the demonstrations with tear gas, water cannons and baton charges.

One police officer died Tuesday after collapsing during a weekend protest. Police said an autopsy showed the officer had a heart attack that could have been caused by injuries suffered during violence at the protest. An Associated Press journalist at the scene said the officer was running toward the protesters with a group of police when he collapsed on the ground and began frothing at the mouth and shaking. Two protesters rushed to the officer to try to help him. Police charged eight people with murder in the death of the policeman.

Police said the rape victim was traveling on the evening of Dec. 16 with a male friend on a bus when they were attacked by six men who gang-raped her and beat the couple with iron rods before stripping them and dumping them on a road. All six suspects in the case have been arrested, police said.

Also Thursday, Ratanjit Singh, a junior minister in the home ministry, said the government would create a database of convicted rapists and publish it, along with their photos, on the ministry website to shame them, according to the Press Trust of India.

HONOLULU (AP) ? Hawaii Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz on Wednesday was appointed the state's next U.S. senator, bucking the dying wishes of U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye to win the support of Gov. Neil Abercrombie.

Schatz, a 40-year-old former nonprofit CEO who ran with Abercrombie for the state's top two offices in 2010, beat out U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa and Esther Kiaaina, a deputy director in the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. The three candidates were selected by state Democrats earlier in the day.

Four days after eulogizing Inouye in the courtyard of the Hawaii Capitol, Abercrombie said he had to consider more than just Inouye's wishes in filling his seat.

"Of course Sen. Inouye's views and his wishes were taken into account fully, but the charge of the central committee, and by extension then myself as governor, was to act in the best interests of the party ... the state and the nation," Abercrombie said.

"The law makes explicitly clear, as do the rules of the Democratic Party, that while everyone's voice is heard and everyone's view is taken into account, nonetheless, no one and nothing is preordained."

Under state law, the successor had to come from the same party as the prior incumbent.

Inouye, by far Hawaii's most influential politician and one of the most respected lawmakers in Washington after serving five decades in the Senate, died last week of respiratory complications at the age of 88. He sent Abercrombie a hand-signed letter dated the day he died, saying he would like Hanabusa to succeed him, calling it his "last wish."

"While we are very disappointed that it was not honored, it was the governor's decision to make," Jennifer Sabas, Inouye's chief of staff, said in a statement. "We wish Brian Schatz the best of luck."

Inouye would be "very happy" with the choice, Hawaii Democratic Party chairman Dante Carpenter said. Schatz has less experience than some older politicians in the Senate but he will be building seniority, which is "critical" to the state of Hawaii, he said.

"In the words of Sen. Dan Inouye ? invoked more than once ? seniority in the United States Congress is everything," Carpenter said.

Selecting Hanabusa, 61, would have required a special election in Hawaii's 1st Congressional District. Last time that happened, Hanabusa lost to Republican Charles Djou because of a winner-take-all format that split votes between Democrats.

Abercrombie said the possibility of a special election was a factor, as well as Hanabusa's "key position" on the House Armed Services Committee. The governor said she was on her way toward establishing a senior position on that panel, and it's important for Hawaii ? with its four-member delegation ? to establish seniority in both chambers.

Schatz will serve until an election is held in 2014. He said he will run for re-election to try to keep the Senate seat until 2016 ? the end of Inouye's original term ? and would run again for Senate in 2016 if given the chance.

"I can assure you this: I will give every fiber of my being to doing a good job for the state of Hawaii," Schatz said at a news conference. "We have a long and perhaps difficult road ahead of us, but we can succeed if we work together. I understand the magnitude of this obligation and this honor, and I won't let you down."

Hanabusa congratulated Schatz in a statement.

"Having served as chair of the Hawaii Senate Judiciary Committee when the succession law was passed, I fully respect the process and the governor's right to appoint a successor," she said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had urged Abercrombie to name Inouye's successor before the end of the year. Schatz said he will leave Hawaii for Washington on Wednesday night and be prepared to be sworn in on Thursday. That would make him Hawaii's senior senator heading into the new Congress, which begins Jan. 3.

Sen. Daniel Akaka is retiring at the end of this Congress, after 22 years in the Senate. Democratic Rep. Mazie Hirono was elected in November to succeed him.

Schatz, 40, is a former state representative and a former chairman of the state Democratic Party. He also was a leader of President Barack Obama's campaign in Hawaii in 2008.

Even before winning the 2010 general election, Abercrombie expressed faith in Schatz, saying he would put him in charge of attracting more private and federal investment in Hawaii. Other responsibilities included leading the state's clean energy efforts and Asia-Pacific relations.

In making his case before the party's central committee earlier Wednesday, Schatz said that if he was appointed, he would strive to make serving in the Senate his life's work.

First in line to replace Schatz as lieutenant governor is Senate President Shan Tsutsui, who said he planned to discuss the prospect with his family before deciding.

Making a remote camera trigger for your DSLR can be as simple as combining a soda can tab and a cable. Instructables user nk dtk shows how to make this dirt cheap remote in practically no time.

Basically, you bend the tab in half and fit it in one end of the 2.5mm male-to-male cable. Plug the other end to your camera, and then when you want to snap a photo, touch the top of the tab to the connector.

nk dtk uses this for his Canon DSLR. You might be able to do the same with your camera model. (And if not, you can create a remote camera trigger from a wireless doorbell, headphones, computer mouse, and other hardware.)

It appears you can make a DIY remote shutter trigger from just about anything. This is one of the cheapest and ingenious solutions, though.

White Christmas shaping up for parts of West Virginia, with 15 inches piled up on Snowshow

SNOWSHOE, W.Va. - It's shaping up to be a white Christmas in parts of West Virginia, and Snowshoe Mountain is getting a welcome blast of that winter weather.

The resort said Saturday it has received a foot of snow in the last 24 hours and the resort now has 15 inches of snow for skiers and snowboarders to enjoy.

Winds that were gusting to 50 mph are also slowing, according to the resort.

The resort said it plans to open new terrain over the next few days.

How to Finish the Year Strong ? Business Management Daily: Free ...

As I write this, there are still two weeks left in the year.

Two weeks ? almost 4% of the year.

Yet many people are already in holiday-coasting mode.

I?m not suggesting that we shouldn?t enjoy the holidays, and remember their importance. And I realize that some of you reading this will have vacations between now and the end of the year.

None of that is a good excuse to not finish strong.

So what do I mean by finishing strong?

If You Are Working

Do important things. Everything on this list will be important things, but I start here because if you don?t decide to do important things, you may squander these days on tasks like cleaning your desk or cleaning out your email. This time of year is too important to work solely on these types of activities.

Reflect and project. Take some time to think about the past year ? what worked and what didn?t? How did you serve your team well ? and how did you let them down? Then think about the coming year ? how will you best support your team? To give you a full set of refection and projection questions, I?ve been publishing "The 12 (Leadership) Days of Christmas" on my blog. Whether you start questions like these before or after Christmas doesn?t matter as much as that you do ask them.

Use the quieter time. The week between Christmas and New Year?s can be the most productive week of the year if you are in the office. Never are there fewer interruptions and more quiet. Since most leaders constantly talk to me about how busy they are with overflowing calendars, this week offers a chance to plan, strategize and prepare for the New Year.

Focus on goals. Certainly this falls into the ?do important things? category, but it deserves its own spot. ?If your goals for the coming year are set, work on your plans for them. If your goals (personal or organizational) aren?t set, there will never be a better time to set them.

If You Are on Vacation

Really refresh. Don?t just cram every moment with activity and travel. Consciously use at least some of the time for relaxation so when you return you are ready mentally, emotionally and physically to succeed in the New Year.

Read. During your time off, read something inspiring or informative. Use some of your away time to put new information into your mind ? information that will make a difference for you in the coming year.

Remember your potential. Often times when spending time with family and friends we are reminded of who we really are. Think about your values, your true identity and your potential. Don?t leave these things at home when you go back to work. Use this time to remind yourself of what you are capable of being and doing ? and bring it back to work with you.

Maybe you will spend time both at work and away. If this is true, pick items from both lists.

As a leader, these activities are doubly important. Because if you are in a holiday coast, so will be all of your team members. Remember, they are watching you ? more than you realize ? and if you don?t finish strong, neither will the rest of your team. Doing anything other than using the end of the year to think, plan, strategize and prepare for a successful New Year is cheating yourself, your team and your organization.

Google Music gets iTunes-like 'match,' but free

Google has updated its music storage and streaming service with a handy new song-matching?feature pioneered by Amazon and Apple?? but unlike those companies' services, Google's is free.

Apple launched its "iTunes Match" service just over a year ago, which for $25 a year would scan your music library and offer to replace your own music files (wherever they came from) with Apple's own. Amazon began offering a similar service in July, for the same price but with a limited free option.

Google's service, which launched as Google Music last year and was?later?renamed Google Play Music, let you upload your songs to the cloud but lacked the matching feature?? until Tuesday.

Users can now let the service scan their library and assemble an online version of it using Google's own version of the?tracks. No need to upload gigabytes of MP3s; Google just verifies the artist and album and makes it available for you to stream to any supported devices (or through the Web app) in 320?kbps quality?? that's higher than the 256 kbps Amazon and Apple offer.

Best of all, the feature is totally free, and if you're already using the service, you don't need to do anything: Google is?already looking through the tracks you've uploaded and making high-quality versions available.

So if you're not paying, who is? Apparently, Google: All Things D reports that Google is cutting checks up front to music makers instead of giving them a piece of whatever they charge users.

One caveat: The high-quality versions of the songs can't be downloaded for local use?? only streamed online. So if you had visions of replacing your old 1999-era,?96?kbps CD rips with shiny new tracks freshly formed by Google, you're in for a disappointment.

Every year, there are roughly 40 million mammograms performed in the U.S. alone. Of those 40 million, about 1/10 are called back for invasive biopsies. the mammograms detect about 300,000 cases of breast cancer each year. Just in the U.S., about 40,000 women a year die of breast cancer. Now, medical science says new technology, could drastically reduce that number.

Digital tomosynthesis is a new kind of test that?s trying to overcome these three big issues. It takes multiple x-ray pictures of each breast from many angles. The breast is positioned the same way it is in a conventional mammogram, but only a little pressure is applied ? just enough to keep the breast in a stable position during the procedure. The x-ray tube moves in an arc around the breast while 11 images are taken during a 7-second examination. Then the information is sent to a computer, where it is assembled to produce clear, highly focused 3-dimensional images throughout the breast.

Early results with digital tomosynthesis are promising. Researchers believe that this new breast imaging technique will make breast cancers easier to see in dense breast tissue and will make breast screening more comfortable.

Digital tomosynthesis (pronounced toh-moh-SIN-thah-sis) creates a 3-dimensional picture of the breast using x-rays.

Digital tomosynthesis is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but is not yet considered the standard of care for breast cancer screening. Because it is relatively new, it is available at a limited number of hospitals.

Digital tomosynthesis of the breast is different from a standard mammogram in the same way a CT scan of the chest is different from a standard chest x-ray. Or think of the difference between a ball and a circle. One is 3-dimensional, the other is flat.
