Time Warner Cable shows Android some love with My TWC app and TWC TV for phones

We're still waiting for Time Warner to bring its live TV streaming to Android, but the platform is enjoying some exclusive support today with two new apps. The first is the My TWC account management app which lets subscribers view their services, pay bills, adjust call forwarding and, soon, tap into their voicemail remotely. The other one is a new version of its TWC TV app, reformatted to work on phones even while the TWCable TV app on iOS is still a tablet only affair. iPhone and Android owners alike shouldn't have to wait long for their relief however, as the iPhone edition is slated to arrive in January, and ICS-enabled live TV streaming is still on the roadmap for "early next year." Hit up the corporate blog for the full feature lists and breakdowns, or just head over to the Android Market to install either free app.

Looking for test-players for a Sci-Fi/Fantasy RP

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for some test-players for a Science Fiction / Fantasy game I've developed with a few friends of mine.
I would prefer if someone would volunteer as Game Master, although I?d gladly assist with anything you may need help with.

In March 2012 we plan to release our New Horizon Roleplaying Game Compendium - 2nd Edition. It will be a 340 page book in Letter size, and we?ll print 1,000 copies of it to start with. Any group of people who?d be willing to test play the game for us would get their names put into the book (under Credits for Test Players). But you?d have to test play the game in a forum (like this one) and give me your thoughts about the game and system afterwards.

I would like to know what you think is most fun with the game, but also what?s the worst thing about it in your opinion and what you think should be improved for future updates. It is enough that the assigned GM provides me with this information. The assigned GM will be credited as a GM and awarded afterwards. The GM must also inform me who test played the game (the names to be put into the book) and a link to the forums where I can see where you played it.

PS! We will only put your name in the book if you provide us with your real name (given name + surname/family name). We also require permission from you to put your name in our book.

You can also contact me at michal[at]newhorizonrpg.com

Allow me to give you a small introduction to New Horizon to show you what kind of game you?ll be dealing with!

--------------------------------------------------------

Introduction

New Horizon is mankind?s new home among the stars. It?s the world which became their new home after leaving Earth. The settlers are surrounded by bizarre alien creatures that are often as deadly as they are amazing. Their lives are filled with the wonders of technology, but are held together by the strength of their resolve. Mankind walks this new world hand in hand with wafans, their sister race of sentient living machines, designed during the darker days of humanity?s past.

New Horizon is not a game where you win and that's the end. Because of the different experiences and imaginations of every individual that comes to the game, New Horizon has an endless variety of stories and experiences for the characters. The game is typically played among a group of friends, usually face to face around some type of gaming surface, but occasionally across the internet at places such as our forums.

The entire endeavor is the creation of a collaborative story between the players and the GM. Players take on the role of an individual on New Horizon, known as their character or a PC (Player Character). They design the character's background story, looks, mannerisms, physical and mental abilities and any other little quirks they can think of to add. The GM takes control of the rest of the world, from animals and governments to weather and Non-player characters (NPCs),and sets the general direction of the story. This general idea may drastically change depending on the players. The GM sets obstacles or opportunities in the path of the players, and the story evolves depending on how they react to each circumstance.

Many things in the game follow common sense, but dice are utilized when there is a chance for success or failure. The New Horizon Roleplaying Game uses the Volt system, which requires just two 20 sided dice (D20's). These dice are rolled and then compared to information on the character's record sheet that is calculated during character creation.

Further information on the Volt system can be found here: http://www.voltsystem.net/doku.php

--------------------------------------------------------

Many things about New Horizon make it unique. One such example is ?wafans?, who are often confused with droid robots but who are in reality living beings. There are also medeans, who are the next evolution of humanity, and something both new and unique. They are humans who have been ?merged? with the unique fauna of New Horizon and they are truly exceptional. The unique wildlife of this moon is yet another thing that makes New Horizon stand out. We also have the alien flora found all over the world, and the inexplicable phenomenon known as Volitaires, Moai, Motes and Whorls.

On Earth, humans reached what could be called a technological pinnacle. They had everything. They even created wafans. When they came to New Horizon, things changed. On Earth, humans had allowed their technological evolution to grow one step at the time. Everything was slowly but systematically evolving, for the better and for the sake of advancement. But when they came to New Horizon, certain things took a huge step back. Cities like Avalon felt little change. The capital of New Horizon is as modern as anything ever found on Earth, but cities like Trapper Town did not have the proper equipment to become a modern city to the same extent.

When Trapper Town was first created, people had to use the materials and equipment that they had with them. Any transportation for larger cargoes was at that time not widely available. This is not to mention that raw materials were still hard to come by. Mining had begun, but not to a great enough extent to make a large difference, and only a few companies existed which were able to do something useful with such raw materials. Most of the things that were created went directly to Avalon, Warhead, Xanadu and Glacier Run City, so the rest of the world was still far less advanced.

Nowadays, many towns and cities in the Walk of Man look like something from the old Wild West or worse, but always with a certain touch of high technology. For similar reasons, many places on New Horizon look like something from either the Middle Ages in Europe or the 19th century in the USA. Certain things are state-of-the-art, but most of the rest is simply old and obsolete. New Horizon is much like the old west, if someone had accidentally teleported it into the future.

New Horizon is a world of action and adventure, where people can explore enormous areas from the great heights of the Azuremar Mountains to the dark depths of the Narehlian jungles, from the frozen plains of the Aquilon?s Reach to the lifeless deserts of the Neo Titanian landscape. Adventurers are encouraged to explore every available part of the world, but know that not all places are easily attainable. Trains and planes exist, but only between major cities. Smaller cities and other areas which are more out of the way are usually harder to reach and sometimes even unattainable.

The world also exhibits a somber side. Not all adventures end happily, even if some do. However, some individuals are still humorous enough to sprinkle the world with some rays of happiness.

New Horizon is unique in many ways. Even though it is a science fiction type of world, it creates the feeling of being a fantasy type of world instead, where people are required to run all around the world on foot, explore forests, mountains, caverns and deserts. If it hadn?t been for the wafans and certain technologies, it would have been seen as a fantasy world instead.

--------------------------------------------------------

Getting Started

1) Fist, you need to set up a group of players, and one of you would have to volunteer to be the Game Master (GM). Post here if you want to announce that you want to play. The GM can of course start up other threads more suitable to his/her needs. Don?t be afraid to volunteer as a GM. Playing this game is not much unlike playing any D&D game, so if you?ve done that then it won?t be hard for you to run the game as a GM at all.

2) The next step would be character creation. We have a free Starter Guide as PDF at our website which will give you the basics, (and please forgive us for any spelling errors you may find, we will release a new Starter Guide in Q1 of 2012).

However, the fastest way to create a player character is to use this Character Creation website: http://www.newhorizonrpg.com/volt/chara ... /index.php
You need to specify your number of Geodites (New Horizon money) and number of Points (for Attributes, Traits, etc.) This number is usually decided by the GM. If you want the players to be average Joes then I recommend 45,000 Geodites and 45 Points. If you want them to be experienced adventurers, then I recommend 60,000 Geodites and 60 Points.

3) Then the GM must set up a campaign. Learn about the different places of the world from our website. Go to ?Planet? and read about the different places where you can play your game. Choose anything from the wild-west inspired Trapper Town to the ice-cold tundra around Glacier Run City or the wild jungles around the Port of Narehl.

Additional RPG materials can be found here: http://www.newhorizonrpg.com/games_rpg.php

The D20 system we use is called Vo|t and it only requires two D20 dice. For forum games we normally use a digital dice which you can find here: http://www.newhorizonrpg.com/volt/index.php

But remember, normally you only need to use Vo|t when you cannot decide fairly the outcome of a battle, or a specific choice or action. However, most encounters can usually be decided without making a dice roll. For this reason, you can choose yourself how to play your game. You can make dice rolls for everything single action in the game or very seldom and only when no other option is available to make a fair decision. The choice is yours!

--------------------------------------------------------

So, do you think it would be possible for me to find some test players at these forums?

Nazi hunters boost drive to find their aging prey

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Gero Breloer / AP

Efraim Zuroff, chief-Nazi hunter of the Simon Wiesenthal Center and director of the Center's Jerusalem Office, announces on Wednesday the launching of "Operation Last Chance II" during a news conference in Berlin, Germany.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center on Wednesday launched a new race against time to prosecute Nazi war criminals still alive 66 years after the end of World War II.

Efraim Zuroff, the center's top Nazi-hunter, told reporters in Berlin that "Operation Last Chance II" would provide up to 25,000 euros ($32,900) in reward money for information that leads to the investigation and prosecution of war criminals.

?

"Whatever can be done has to be done very promptly and as quickly as possible because time is running out," Zuroff said, claiming the passage of time does not diminish the guilt of the killers.

The effort comes after German prosecutors said in October that the successful conviction of former Ohio autoworker John Demjanjuk had set a precedent?that allowed them to reopen hundreds of dormant investigations.

Demjanjuk, 91, was convicted in May of thousands of counts of accessory to murder after a Munich court found he served as a death camp guard ? the first time a suspect had been found guilty without evidence of a specific crime. The court ruled that any guard at a Nazi camp whose sole purpose was to kill people could be convicted of accessory to murder.

John Demjanjuk emerges from a Munich, Germany, court on May 12, 2011, after a judge sentenced him to 5 years in prison for charges related to 28,060 counts of accessory to murder.

Demjanjuk denies having ever served as a guard and is appealing the verdict.

"What this conviction does is set a legal precedent that should pave the way for the prosecution of many people who were on a daily basis over a prolonged period of time involved in mass murder but who had been ignored," Zuroff said.

About 4,000 people were either guards at the four Nazi camps used only for killings ? Belzec, Sobibor, Chelmno and Treblinka ? or members of the Einsatzgruppen death squads responsible for mass killings, particularly early in the war before the death camps were established.

Zuroff said that he did not know how many were still alive ? the youngest would now be in their 80s ? but that he guessed conservatively there could be 80 or more.

"I think it's not a gross exaggeration to assume that 2 percent are still probably alive," he said.

Zuroff said a high-ranking living Nazi is in sights but he cannot reveal his name because of an ongoing criminal investigation, the Jerusalem Post reported.

"I am not saying who because he?s a flight risk," Zuroff said. "This person was a commander and involved in very serious actions against Jews."

Zuroff also said Klaas Farber, an alleged SS hitman in Holland, was the most senior Nazi known to be alive today. Faber lives in the Bavarian city of Ingolstadt, Germany.?He was sentenced in a Dutch court in 1947 was convicted of murdering 22 Jews in the occupied Netherlands during WWII, but he escaped?prison in 1952.

Prosecutors in Dortmund also are currently investigating six former members of an SS armored division that was responsible for the largest massacre in Nazi-occupied France under the same theory that led to Demjanjuk?s prosecution.

The Wiesenthal Center is asking for tips?to a new hotline in Germany. Though the focus of the investigation is Germany, Zuroff said suspects could live anywhere in the world.

A reward of 5,000 euros will be paid for the information upon the indictment of a suspect, another 5,000 euros upon conviction, and a further 100 euros per day spent in prison ? up to 150 days ? for a total of 25,000 euros, Zuroff said.

The center's original "Operation Last Chance" was launched in 2002 and targeted primarily eastern European countries. It ended up with 102 suspects' names being turned over to prosecutors. Of those, only a handful were ever indicted or tried, Zuroff said.

Zuroff said that at this late stage, with few witnesses left and suspects' health often preventing them from being brought to trial, he measures success in six stages: exposure; official investigation; indictment; trial; conviction; and punishment.

"It's very hard today to get to stage six," he said.

"The answer is very simple," Zuroff said. "One, the passage in time does not diminish guilt of killers. Two, old age does not afford protection to?murderers. Three, all the victims deserve efforts to find their killers. Four, it sends an important message to those today that they are being brought to justice."

Former Ohio resident John Demjanjuk is found guilty for his involvement in thousands of deaths at a Nazi death camp during World War II.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Click KeyPad Watch is the timewasting retro-timepiece you've been waiting for

We do like a good indecipherable timepiece 'round these parts and Click's KeyPad certainly fits the bill. Resembling an old-school mechanical numerical keypad, each button packs an LED -- press any number and it'll blink out the time in single digits, so if it was 9:15am, the zero, nine, one and five buttons would flash in sequence. Push the hash key and the watch will oblige you for today's date. If you enjoy frustrating colleagues who ask you for the time, then you'll be delighted to hear that it costs $90 and is shipping now. However, we're not sure we could pull one off -- maybe the hipster down the street will have better success.

PROMISES, PROMISES: Securing US border impossible

But a border that is sealed to all illegal immigrants and drugs is a promise none of them could keep. (AP Photo/Delcia Lopez, File)

(AP) ? Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich have promised to complete a nearly 1,950-mile fence. Michele Bachmann wants a double fence. Ron Paul pledges to secure the nation's southern border by any means necessary, and Rick Perry says he can secure it without a fence ? and do so within a year of taking office as president.

But a border that is sealed off to all illegal immigrants and drugs flowing north is a promise none of them could keep.

"Securing the border is a wonderful slogan, but that's pretty much all it is," said Ted Galen Carpenter, a senior fellow at the libertarian Cato Institute. "Even to come close would require measures that would make legal commerce with Mexico impossible. That's an enormous price for what would still be a very leaky system."

Perry, the longest-serving governor of a state that makes up roughly 65 percent of America's border with Mexico, already knows that. What he's actually pledging, clarifies spokeswoman Catherine Frazier, is achieving "operational control" of the border ? defined by the U.S. Border Patrol as areas where it can detect, respond to and interdict illegal activity either at the border or after entry into the U.S.

The U.S. Border Patrol says 873 miles of the border, about 44 percent, have been brought under operational control. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has said that "the border is better now than it ever has been."

Still, that means full control isn't even half met. And even getting this far required bolstering the ranks of the Border Patrol to the highest levels ever, from about 9,500 along the border in 2004 to 18,152 today. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also has a record number of agents on the border, and five Predator drones now patrol strategic parts of it, with a sixth coming by the end of the year. About 650 miles of fencing has been constructed, and 1,200 National Guard soldiers dispatched last year to Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico have had their deployment extended through the end of the year.

Campaigning in Iowa last week, Gingrich signed a pledge to build a fence stretching the length of the border by the end of 2013. That may help him recover from a recent statement that illegal immigrants who have been established in the U.S. for many years should be allowed to remain in the country ? a position his opponents have likened to amnesty.

Perry has steadfastly opposed the fence, saying it would take 10 to 15 years to build, cost $30 billion and wouldn't work anyway. Instead, he wants to flood the border with more National Guard troops until the number of Border Patrol agents necessary to really secure the area are trained and deployed. He also wants to build strategic fencing in high-traffic areas and make better use of airborne surveillance. Perry claims that would mean full operational control by January 2014.

Romney, meanwhile, has publicly agreed with Perry that tackling larger immigration policy reform is impossible without first securing the border.

By some measures, U.S. authorities already have made strides toward that goal. The Pew Hispanic Center says the number of illegal immigrants in the United States peaked at 12 million in 2007, but then dropped by almost 1 million through 2009, and has largely held steady since then at about 11.1 million.

Border Patrol apprehensions of illegal immigrants have also fallen sharply. In fiscal year 2011, which ended Sept. 30, the Border Patrol captured 327,577 illegal immigrants on the southwestern border ? the lowest total in four decades.

The poor U.S. economy makes would-be illegal immigrants less likely to come, and those who do must contend with Mexico's drug war, which has seen cartel gunmen slaughter people heading north and dump their bodies in mass graves. Jeff Passel, the Pew Center's senior demographer, said the trip is now so risky that the number of illegal immigrants using pricey people smugglers has spiked.

"It's hard to separate the effect of the economy and increased enforcement," Passel said. "It's a lot harder physically to get across the border, but it's also more expensive and more dangerous, and you're faced with the prospect of having no job when you get here."

Spillover into the U.S. of Mexican drug violence is also difficult to measure. In terms of violent crime, El Paso, Texas, ranks among the safest cities in the U.S. ? even though it's across from violence-torn Ciudad Juarez. Drug crime aside, Rep. Michael McCaul, a Texas Republican who heads a Homeland Security subcommittee, said he's worried about cartels teaming with international terrorists.

"It's not secure," McCaul said of the border, "and anybody that lives down there, I think, will tell you that." U.S. intelligence officials counter that they know of no case in which a terrorist has sneaked across the border to plot actively against the U.S.

Carpenter, who has written extensively on the increasing brutality of Mexican drug cartels, called the presidential candidates' pledges to secure the border "mainly defensive."

"If you don't take a strong position on border security, you leave yourself open to allegations that you're soft on immigration or drugs," he said.

Michael Lytle, a former consultant on border security and counterterrorism, said it's hard to even conceptualize a fully secure border since the Arizona desert presents different challenges than the millions of commercial trucks rumbling north into Laredo, Texas, or than pedestrians streaming from Tijuana to San Diego. Tracking would-be terrorists also has little to do with stopping migrant workers sneaking into the U.S., or coping with well-armed drug smugglers.

"You can't look at it as 'the whole border,'" he said.

Lytle, an associate professor at the University of Texas at Brownsville, said a deployment of 15,000 National Guard troops could make an impact ? but it would be a hard sell for a Defense Department facing budget cuts.

"A troop surge there, would that seal the border? Probably not," Lytle said. "And even if it did, how long could you sustain that?"
