Dickey's Barbecue (BBQ) Restaurant Review | Restaurant Reviews ...

If you have been following my blog for a while now, you will notice that the southerner comes out often. ?And by southerner, I mean my love of all things grilled or BBQ. ?I have reviews on Sonny?s, Woody?s (<?that is on my do not eat list) and soon, Jenkins and Mojo 4 will be on it as well. ?Check out my Restaurant Review Video below:

9825 San Jose Blvd.
Jacksonville, Florida 32257
(904)830-4554

Location: It?s in a strip mall :( For some reason, I just don?t like my BBQ restaurants in a strip mall, but what can you do? Sometimes the food is just worth the sacrifice right? This is the strip mall that used to house Woody?s (the one that I did a horrible review on) but was recently replaced by Firehouse Subs. It?s right down the street from K-Mart.

Food: To be honest with you, I had never heard of this restaurant until I saw their deal: Dickey?s BBQ Pulled Pork Big Barbecue Sandwich Combo pop up on Earthguy.com (think Groupon, but better) so I figured ?why not branch out??

Standing outside of Dickey?s, I wasn?t hoping for much. As you can see, it?s very nondescript. But, when I walked in, I was surprised how they made you forget you were in a strip mall. Everything is what you would expect in a BBQ joint. The table clothes, old signs, non-formal uniforms on the empolyees, yet the place had a very very clean feel to it. Once I looked around, I went up to order the Pulled Pork Sandwich Combo. For sides, I went with the traditional fried okra (it?s a southern thing, some of you won?t understand) and the mac & cheese. Let me say this, after reading the other Urbanspoon reviews, they were very friendly and greeted me almost immediately. Maybe they caught them on a bad day? Ok, back to the food. My order was ready within minutes (I think the only reason it wasn?t even faster was they had to fry the okra, which I?m glad it was fried to order). On my way to the table, I noticed they have a ?sauce bar? where you help yourself to whatever and however much you want.

First up is the pork sandwich. The bread was nice and fresh, the pork was moist and had a nice sauce on it (not sweet). It comes with pickles and onions that you can add on to it. I give the sandwich a B+, I would definitely eat it again. The fried okra was awesome. Very hot, crispy and not ?snotty? on the inside. And to top the meal off, the mac & cheese was creamy. This would be the one ?meh? of the meal. I?ve had the same mac & cheese a million times. Next time, I will try out the cole slaw. That will show me what they are made of. That can be a signature dish in my eyes. All slaw IS NOT CREATED EQUAL. All in all, I recommend this restaurant. One of the other things to think about: It?s a small business owner that bought this franchise location and he is a retired Navy pilot. It?s good to see a local business step it up and separate itself from the big chains with some good food to do it with.

Extras: One nice touch that I saw is that they have a self serve soft ice cream machine that is free for everyone. Uh?if you have kids, this is a big plus. If you are fat?like me?this is a big plus. If you are skinny?I don?t trust you :) I?m just kidding. But who doesn?t love free ice cream?

The Good:
- Very clean restaurant
- Moist Pork
- Sauce Bar
- Free Ice Cream!
- Perfect Fried Okra
- Your drink cup is a souvenir cup

The Bad:
- It?s in a shopping center
- There isn?t one downtown (yeah, first world problems lol)

?Hey, watch where you?re going!? An older man growled as he looked down at Wynnie. She pressed her hands to her chest and looked down sheepishly. Wynnie resembled that of a lost sheep in a school uniform: she had a baby face and big brown eyes, along with short brunette hair that had cowlicks in the weirdest and most annoying of places. Her hands were small as well as the rest of her. It looked like she hadn't hit puberty yet and still held that chubby innocence.

?S-sorry,? she muttered under her breath. The man in a black beanie sighed.

?Tch, whatever.? he waved her off and pushed past the crowd to get a better look for the First Placement Match of the day. All the students had arrived early, including Wynnie, although it was hard for her to get here. She didn?t like large crowds, she wasn?t used it?since she was from the country and all. Looking around Wynnie could not spot her Spirit, but knowing her well, she knew that her Spirit Ash would want her to get as up to the front as possible.

Squishing herself in-between people and crawling under them, she made it to the front and looked down at the stage. Everyone looked down on the stage that all the fighting would take place in. You could say it was like the Globe Theatre Shakespeare had performed in, or a Roman Coliseum just?.instead with Chinese architecture. This building?more like a temple?had 20 floors. The first ten were unused during fights because of safety reasons. There were 10 Skyscraper temples just like this at the back of the school in a well spaced circle: 5 for the Spirit Placement Exam and 5 for the Spell Placement Exam. Wynnie was in Temple 1C, on the 11th floor.

Suddenly, all the chattering in the building came to a whisper?and grew to nothingness. Snapping out of her daze, Wynnie looked down to see a woman with flaming red hair. Her hair was tied up into a high ponytail and smoothly ran down past her butt. A pink scarf with white and dark red stripes was wrapped around her neck, and over her torso was a black bikini with red flames. A long black glove was on her left while a short black glove on her right. She walked with confidence in her mini-shorts and high-top socks with bulky boots. She looked incredibly intimidating and seductive.

The woman smiled and raised her hand in the air.

?Sorry I am late everyone! I am the Headmaster of this school, Shinigami Sprite. I wish you the best of luck in todays Placement Exam! Don?t let the nervousness get to you, and just try your best!!!? she beamed brightly, slightly giggling. Wynnie smiled. She seemed like a nice person.

?Is what Losers say!!? she yelled and pointed up at the stands, a menacing look on her face. Wynnies eyes widened. Her voice?was suddenly so deep. ?Babies don?t make it far in this world, fight like your life depends on it!? She pumped her fist up into the air and everyone in the crowd copied the gesture. Loud shuts and roars and growls echoed throughout the room. Wynnie covered her ears and hung her head low. People were leaning over the stands, smiling, laughing, and yelling?this place was weird. It was scary..she wanted to go home.

?That?s the spirit,? Mrs. Shinigami laughed and put her hand on her hips. ?Kerlston,? she whispered, flexing out her arm, lights began to gather at the end of her hand, forming into a gun. Clicking the huge gun, she rested it on her hips, and shot a bullet up into the sky, yelling, ?Let the games begin!!!?

Obama presses Congress for deal to end spending cuts

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Just hours after across-the-board spending cuts officially took effect, President Barack Obama pressed Congress on Saturday to work with him on a compromise to halt a fiscal crisis he said was starting to "inflict pain" on communities across the United States.

Obama and a bipartisan group of congressional leaders failed on Friday to avoid the deep spending reductions known as the "sequester," which automatically kicked in overnight in the latest sign of dysfunction in a divided Washington.

If left in place without legislative remedy, government agencies will have to hack a total of $85 billion from their budgets between Saturday and October 1, cuts that over time could cause economic harm, slash jobs and curb military readiness.

"These cuts are not smart," Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address. "They will hurt our economy and cost us jobs. And Congress can turn them off at any time - as soon as both sides are willing to compromise."

Obama signed an order on Friday night that started putting the cuts into effect.

At the heart of Washington's persistent fiscal showdowns is disagreement over how to slash the budget deficit and the $16 trillion national debt, bloated over the years by wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and government stimulus for the ailing economy.

The Democratic president wants to close the fiscal gap with spending cuts and tax hikes - what he calls a "balanced approach." But Republicans do not want to concede again on taxes after doing so in negotiations over the "fiscal cliff" at the New Year.

"The discussion about revenue, in my view, is over. It's about taking on the spending problem," John Boehner, the Republican House of Representatives speaker, said on leaving the talks between Obama and congressional leaders on Friday.

As Obama and his aides have done for weeks, the president in his radio address offered a litany of hardships he said would flow from the sequester, saying, "Severe budget cuts ... have already started to inflict pain on communities across the country."

"Beginning this week, businesses that work with the military will have to lay folks off. Communities near military bases will take a serious blow. Hundreds of thousands of Americans who serve their country - Border Patrol agents, FBI agents, civilians who work for the Defense Department - will see their wages cut and their hours reduced," he said.

"The longer these cuts remain in place, the greater the damage," he said. "Economists estimate they could eventually cost us more than 750,000 jobs and slow our economy by over one-half of one percent." Despite that, financial markets shrugged off the stalemate on Friday.

NO SIGNS OF NEGOTIATIONS

While Obama has put the blame for the cuts on Republicans' intransigence and their determination to protect tax breaks for the wealthy, Republicans insist he is responsible for the fiscal predicament. They also accuse him of exaggerating the expected impact.

Obama appealed for Republicans to work with Democrats on a deal, saying Americans were weary of seeing Washington "careen from one manufactured crisis to another." But he offered no new ideas to resolve the situation, and there was no immediate sign of any negotiations planned over the weekend.

"There's a caucus of common sense (in Congress)," Obama said. "And I'm going to keep reaching out to them to fix this for good."

One reason for the inaction in Washington is that both parties still hope the other will either be blamed by voters for the cuts or cave in before the worst effects predicted by Democrats come into effect.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Friday showed 28 percent of Americans blamed congressional Republicans for the sequestration mess, 18 percent thought Obama was responsible and 4 percent blamed congressional Democrats. Thirty-seven percent blamed them all, according the online poll.

Diverse coral reef yields many new species

Jim Thomas

A new species of nudibranch discovered in Madang Lagoon, Papua New Guinea.

By Becky Oskin
LiveScience

A vast array of new species was recently discovered in the world's most spectacular reef you've never heard of -- Madang Lagoon in Papua New Guinea.

"It is the most diverse reef in the world," said marine biologist Jim Thomas, a researcher at Nova Southeastern University's National Coral Reef Institute in Hollywood, Fla.

Madang Lagoon is also one of the world's most threatened coral reefs, Thomas added, imperiled by nearby industry. A World Bank-sponsored tuna cannery opened recently, drawing tiger sharks attracted to offal dumped offshore. Another 10 canneries are planned, Thomas said. Along the Ramu River, which drains into the lagoon, a massive nickel mine just started operation. The mining company dumps its sludge a mile offshore, but Thomas is concerned the sediment could contaminate the lagoon.

"It's getting ready to be severely impacted," Thomas told OurAmazingPlanet.

Jim Thomas

A new amphipod species from Madang Lagoon. The tiny, shrimp-like creature lives inside a clam.

An international team surveyed Madang Lagoon's coral reefs in December 2012, to document changes since the last survey 20 years ago and provide a baseline for any changes due to development. Biologist Philippe Bouchet of the Natural History Museum in Paris led a lagoonwide survey, while Thomas and his colleagues returned to the site of their expedition in the 1990s.

The good news is that despite the ensuing development, the reef is as diverse as it was 20 years ago, Thomas said. In fact, both teams found new marine creatures.

Because they revisited the same sites, Thomas' team, which searched for invertebrates, knew right off they had discovered new species, he said. These include amphipods, tiny shrimplike creatures that live inside sponges and clams, and fernlike crinoids, which grip the coral. A new pink nudibranch, a snail without a shell, was also found. The French group also documented a wide array of new species, which await publication in scientific journals.

Though the invertebrates monitored at Madang Lagoon aren't as photogenic as flashy fish, the species are important indicators of reef health and biodiversity, Thomas said. "When an impact hits a reef, these species are the first to disappear, while coral may take five, 10, 15 years," he explained. "Most of the time, when something bad happens, by the time it hits the coral it's too late."

Jim Thomas

This new crinoid species was discovered in Madang Lagoon.

Thomas thinks Madang Lagoon acquired its species diversitythough its unusual geologic setting. The lagoon sits on the northern coast of Papua New Guinea, an island roughly the size of California, where two of Earth's tectonic plates collide. As the Pacific plate slammed volcanic islands into Papua New Guinea over the millennia, species hitching a ride added to the diversity.

The researchers hope local clans that own the lagoon will use the species survey to protect the reef against the effects of development. "These multinational companies can overwhelm landowners, and they really have no recourse," Thomas said.
